Kagen Stands With Kimberly Mill Workers
Rally: Saturday September 6 - 3:00 pm at Memorial Park in Kimberly
On Saturday September 6 at 3:00 pm Congressman Kagen will join workers from the Kimberly Mill, along with their families and friends from the surrounding communities at a rally in Memorial Park in Kimberly. Kagen is working hard to protect papermaking jobs in Northeast Wisconsin and will stand with the workers as they call on the mill owners, NewPage Corp., to run the profitable mill or sell it to someone else who will.
Created in 1889, The Kimberly Mill has survived two World Wars, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. Generation after generation, it has provided livelihood for its workers, their families and the surrounding communities. On July 30, 2008, the NewPage Corporation announced the closure of the Kimberly Mill and the elimination of approximately 470 papermaking jobs. NewPage also closed its mill in Niagara, WI on July 12 putting 319 people out of work. NewPage Corp has made the decision to permanently shut down this mill and refuses to sell it to anyone despite its current profitability.
