Representative Kagen Announces Grant for Kaukauna Schools

Kaukauna schools awarded grant

The Kaukauna Area School District was awarded a $276,397 Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Congressman Steve Kagen, D-Appleton, announced today.

The Kaukauna Area School District will use the grant to help enhance its pre-K through 12 physical education programs, Lisa Otto, physical education teacher and one of the grant applicants said. Tanner Elementary School, a pre-K through 2nd grade school in the Kaukauna Area School District, is one of 200 pilot schools nationwide in the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The Alliance is supported by the American Heart Association and is dedicated to combating childhood obesity.

Kaukauna School physical education instructors Lisa Otto, Mickey Neumann, Suzie Mursau, and Kim Matczak wrote the grant.

The schools plan to improve rock-climbing walls and fitness testing programs, Otto said. In addition, lifetime sports and adventure education programs will benefit from a mountain biking program and other programs and equipment made possible by the grant.

“Preventing human illnesses can only begin with the development of lifelong habits including physical exercise and the very best nutrition. These healthy lifestyles are being taught in the Kaukauna Area School District which is becoming a national leader in helping children to develop healthy habits,” Kagen said in a statement.
