Kagen To Mile-High Rescue [Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel]

By Diana Marrero

Washington - Steve Kagen shut down his medical practice when he became a congressman. But that didn’t keep him from administering a little medical advice midflight on his way home last week.

Kagen, an Appleton Democrat, was on board a Northwest Airlines flight Thursday from Washington to Minneapolis, the first leg of his trip to Wisconsin, when a woman fainted on the plane.

“I don’t know if they yelled, ‘Is there a doctor in the house?’ ” said his spokesman Jake Rubin.

But Kagen, who has been an allergy doctor for about three decades, responded quickly. “He took her blood pressure, told her to lie down and kept her calm,” Rubin said.

The plane was given priority when it landed, and paramedics met the woman as she disembarked. Her condition was unknown.

Kagen is one of 13 doctors in the U.S. House, according to the Office of the House Historian. There are two in the Senate.
